I find it reprehensible when I see parents whose children suffer with drugs, eating disorders and other addictions refuse to acknowledge a problem exists, especially when they do not seek treatment for their children because they don’t not want the “stigma” of addiction to attach to themselves or their children. These parents forge ahead as if everything is fine.
I recently overheard one mother say “I just want my kids to get into college so I can say I did my job.” And that is exactly what happened. Her daughter went to college and after several years, she received treatment for her eating disorder. Her other daughter went to college and continues to experience personal and legal troubles due to her drug and alcohol addictions, yet they feel they were good parents, because their children got into college.
I was talking to a friend of mine whose son just accepted a scholarship to college in the fall. She was congratulating herself on a job well done and about “her” college accomplishment. She feels she is a success because her son is a good kid, a smart kid and a normal kid. My other friend listened intently Office Visio Key, but when we asked about her daughter, her face instantly transformed from interest to worry. She explained that she is not sure her daughter will go to college and the drugs that passed her friend’s son by threaten to envelop her daughter. Her daughter is turning 14. Addiction. It permeated the room; we all felt it and some of us understood it.
She continued to talk about the challenges of her ex being unaware of her daughter’s drug use and his insistence that she was fine. I listened as my friend quietly said, “I am simply grateful for another day that my daughter chooses to stay alive.” The other friend loudly praised her parenting as the reason her son didn’t develop an addiction. Worry is universal for parents who care about their children. The difficulty, I find, lies in the subtext that exists in communication between parents; the subtle message that says,”I was a better parent than you, because my child is going to college and didn’t have problems with drugs.” No one comes right out to say it, but it is heard nonetheless.
For the parent whose child has difficulties early, the burden of blame typically falls on the mother. At times, this burden is so heavy that it is easier to end the friendship and deal with your child’s challenges alone. Only after your child is grown and has self-corrected do they feel they can go back and revisit the friendship. I’ve seen parents who know their children are taking drugs and close to disaster, but hearing about a friends child’s addiction is too much for them to bear. Her friends viewed her as an example of everything that could go wrong; of every fear parents have for their children. Life is already too hard. They cannot and will not let any more fear in.
I witnessed my friend become depleted by being the sole person who struggled through her daughter’s addictions and the legal troubles in the family court system. I watched her lose her softness and the comfort that came from being unaware. But when her friends’ children stumbled, experienced addictions and tangled with the law, they did not call her and say Office 2011 MAC Key, Hey Server 2008 Key, my kids are in trouble too — let’s talk and share. They lied. They were clear that this was not going to happen to them. They had harshly judged those parents whose children had used drugs and they refused to admit they were now on the same path. Denial remains the biggest white elephant in the room. I witnessed a father completely rewrite history to create a better story for himself and his son. This father judged and blamed the mother for their child’s drug use and the story he told about the addiction, the subsequent fallout and rehab was altered to present him in a positive way. For those of us firmly rooted in reality, the only option, when confronted with a child’s addiction, is to remain committed to the truth; both past and present. Spending energy on convincing anyone that you are not to blame or pointing the finger on those whom you want to believe is to blame is destructive and futile.
Acceptance of our children’s struggles and the willingness to confront the hard issues when they come into our home is a choice many of us will face. It is never easy, but it is made harder when those we trusted judge, abandon or blame us. Judgment will not keep your children safe from drugs and addictions. When blame is directed at us during the crisis, marriages suffer and friendships end. When your friends isolate you and your children, they will not be able to teach their children about compassion, consequences and friendship. Families struggling with addictions are part of our community. Instead of weakening the community through denial, we should strive to help, support and understand that which threatens any and all of our families.

BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng made a dramatic plea for U.S. protection in a cellphone call to a congressional hearing from his hospital bed in Beijing, raising pressure on President Barack Obama over his administration’s handling of the case.
Chen, a self-taught legal activist, sheltered in the U.S. embassy for six days until Wednesday when he left after U.S.-brokered assurances from the Chinese government that he and his family would receive better treatment inside China.
But within hours, Chen changed his mind and is now under Chinese control in a Beijing hospital where he says he was taken by U.S. officials for treatment for a broken foot and to be reunited with his wife and two young children.
“I want to come to the U.S. to rest. I have not had a rest in 10 years,” Chen said by phone to Thursday’s U.S. congressional hearing on his case. His comments were translated by a witness, Bob Fu, head of Texas-based religious and human rights group ChinaAid, who had called Chen on his cellphone.
At the same time, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Beijing for talks aimed at improving ties between the two superpowers – a big challenge given increasingly strident Chinese criticism of how Washington has handled the Chen case.
She told Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday that ties were the strongest they had ever been, adding: “We have developed a very open and honest relationship where we can discuss our differences, and we remain committed to bridging those differences whenever and wherever possible.”
Despite Clinton’s brave face, one of China’s main official newspapers accused Chen of being a pawn of American subversion of Communist Party power and called the U.S. ambassador, Gary Locke, a backpack-wearing, Starbucks-sipping troublemaker.
“Chen Guangcheng has become a tool and a pawn for American politicians to blacken China,” the Beijing Daily said.
Chen said he wanted to meet Clinton to ask her for help and to thank her, according to Fu’s translation. He said villagers who had helped him were “receiving retribution” and he was most concerned about the safety of his mother and brothers.
“I’m really scared for my other family members’ lives,” Chen said. “They have installed seven video cameras and are in my house.”
A pack of camera crews and reporters have been waiting outside Chen’s hospital in Beijing, kept away from the entrance by police. Radio Free Asia quoted Chen as saying he had received no visits from friends and his phone service was unreliable.
CRITICISM MOUNTS
U.S. officials have defended their handling of the case Tattoo Kits, but Republicans and Chen’s supporters were critical, saying the White House must ensure Chen’s safety. He sought refuge in the U.S. embassy after escaping from house arrest in a village in rural Shandong province on April 22.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said if the reports were accurate, the U.S. Embassy “failed to put in place the kind of verifiable measures that would ensure the safety of Mr Chen and his family.
“If these reports are true, this is a dark day for freedom, and it’s a day of shame of the Obama administration,” Romney said in Virginia as he campaigned for the November election.
China’s Foreign Ministry has declined to comment on Chen’s request to leave the country and repeated its criticism of the way the United States had handled the issue as “unacceptable”. China has demanded a U.S. apology.
Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chairwoman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee Cheap Tattoo Machines, said: “It should have been obvious to U.S. officials all along that there is no way to guarantee Mr Chen’s safety so long as he is within reach of the Chinese police state.”

Fu of ChinaAid said Chen had told him that while he was at the embassy, U.S. officials conveyed a message that if he didn’t leave that day his family would be returned to the village where his family had lived “in hell” for years. Fu quoted Chen as saying: “I felt great pressure to leave.”
DECISION TO LEAVE
Chen Tattoo Ink, 40, is a legal activist who campaigned against forced abortions under China’s “one-child” policy.
U.S. officials say Chen left the embassy of his own free will because he wanted to be reunited with his family. They said he wanted to remain in China and never asked for asylum.
“He knew the stark choices in front of him,” U.S. ambassador Locke told reporters in Beijing on Thursday. “He knew and was very aware that he might have to spend many, many years in the embassy. But he was prepared to do that …
“And he was fully aware of and talked about what might happen to his family if he stayed in the embassy and they stayed in the village in Shandong province.”
The issue is overshadowing talks in Beijing with Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner which Washington had hoped would secure more cooperation from China on trade and international flashpoints such as North Korea, Iran and Syria.
“TRAIN WRECK”
White House spokesman Jay Carney said State Department officials were in talks with Chen, his wife and Chinese officials. He rejected suggestions that U.S. diplomats, seeking to defuse the situation with Beijing, had pressured Chen into his original decision to stay in China.
“And at every opportunity he expressed his desire to stay in China, reunify with this family, continue his education and work for reform in his country,” Carney said. “There was no pressure of any kind placed on him by U.S. officials.”
The Chen case also comes at a tricky time for China which is engaged in a leadership change later this year. The carefully choreographed transition has already been jarred by the downfall of ambitious senior Communist Party official Bo Xilai in a scandal linked to the apparent murder of a British businessman.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Hours after confirming to reporters that the United States had found its fourth-ever case of mad cow disease, John Clifford was ready to answer the world’s questions about the safety of U.S. beef.
Clifford, the government’s chief veterinary officer at the agriculture department, had quickly called his counterparts in Mexico and Canada, the first and second-largest buyers of U.S. beef, to tell them about a California cow found to have an “atypical” type of the brain-wasting disease.
Having taken up his post in May 2004, just six months after the first U.S. case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy was discovered, he knows that sharing information quickly during the next 24 hours — and in the weeks ahead — will be vital for reassuring consumers, both domestic and foreign.
“It’s critically important for the trust and continuing of the trade between those countries,” Clifford said in an interview, trying to pre-empt concerns about the nation’s herd that could send the multi-billion U.S. industry into another tailspin.
The first case of mad cow at the end of 2003 caused a $3 billion plunge in beef export revenues. Foreign trade did not fully recover until 2011.
Two more cases followed, the last in 2006. But since the disease was discovered in 1986 Tattoo accessories, the international incidence of BSE has dramatically dwindled to only 29 cases last year, down from a peak in 1992 of more than 37,000.
“I think we’ve come a long way since then, and I think it’s important for our trading partners in the world to start treating this disease the way it needs to be treated,” he said.
He said the USDA will release information in coming weeks as it traces the epidemiological history of the cow – where she was born, what she ate as a young calf, and what happened to its “cohorts,” other calves born on the same farm in the same time period.
Part of the U.S. message will be that the type of mad cow disease found is “atypical,” meaning that it was much less to have come from contaminated feed.
“It is a rare form, and it is also something that we believe not to be likely to be passed from feed to feed,” Clifford said.
STRUGGLED TO REGAIN ACCESS
Since 2003, when the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, was found in a Washington State cow that had been imported from Canada, the United States has struggled to regain full market access to Japan, its previous top buyer, as well as in Korea, Taiwan, and China.
Before daybreak in Asia, Clifford said it was hard to gauge how Asian buyers would react this time around.
“The impact should not affect exports. Now, I’m not saying it may or may not, but it should not,” Clifford told reporters at a hastily arranged announcement at USDA headquarters.
The news conference had been moved up after rumors of the case roiled cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, initially sending them down more than 2.5 percent for their biggest drop in seven months.
Prices rebounded in after-hours trading after the USDA confirmed the case, and said the cow had been found at a rendering plant, where livestock unfit for human consumption are sent.
CRITICAL TIME FOR BEEF TRADE
The discovery comes at a critical time for U.S. trade.
Japan How To Tattoo Gun, once the largest market for U.S. beef, banned imports from the United States in December 2003 along with many other countries and only partially reopened its market in 2006 to some beef and beef products from animals aged 20 months or younger.
Many top U.S. lawmakers have demanded a further opening by Japan as a “down payment” for Tokyo’s bid to join negotiations with the United States and eight other countries in Asia and Latin America on a proposed regional free trade pact known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Farmers are nervous about the impact the new case could have on trade with Japan.

The United States has also pressed South Korea repeatedly over the past eight years to lift mad cow-related trade restrictions.
The USDA has already armed its trade staff and veterinary officials at U.S. embassies around the world with the facts it knows so far about the case – and an overarching message of safety and prevention.
USDA officials will talk to their government counterparts as well as buyers in the private sector, Clifford said.
The emphasis is clear: this case shows that the system is working, not that there are new risks to fear.
“The U.S. food supply is very safe. We have a very robust surveillance system,” he says. “That’s why we were able to detect this case.”

He said there was an implausibility about suggestions that Ms Gillard knew nothing of this until very recently.
“These aren’t just allegations against Craig Thomson,” he said.
“These are findings of fact that have been made against him by a quasi-judicial body.”

The gist: Up to 60 agents knew two of the al-Qaida hijackers were in the United States before the attacks; the CIA’s communications skills with other security agencies were worse than we thought; and counterterrorism resources allocated to it in the mid-’90s were diverted toward espionage services. George Tenet is singled out by bloggers for censure.
